Softwares: The Spend and The Save

Some people spend tons of money on softwares. Sometimes, I can’t help but go WTF with all this because the softwares they buy does the same thing as its free counterpart. Hence, I have decided to make a list of the softwares which are paid for and alongside are the softwares which do the same thing but are free.

FTP
Spend: WS FTP Pro
Save: Smart FTP

HTML Editor (with Tabs and Syntax Highlighting)
Spend: Ultra Edit
Save: Notepad++

Image Manipulator
Spend: Adobe Photoshop
Save: The GIMP

Antivirus
Spend: Norton Antivirus
Save: Avast! Antivirus

File Extractors
Spend: WinZip
Save: 7-Zip

That’s all I can think of at the moment. If you’ve got anything to add, feel free to hit me up, okay?

ETA: I’ve re-written my about page. Go check it out.

LOL, I use WS_FTP LE, and that’s free for personal use.

Hey, wait, did you get this list off of some place? LOL, I just read an article recently that’s like this… LOL..

But yes, LOL, yes, Avast is really nice.

LOL about WinZip… I’m still using it for free… They don’t “make” you pay for it, it still goes through. But it doesn’t matter to me, since I don’t use it too much.

A good, free firewall is Comodo, but I believe you’ve covered that somewhere before?

But yes, I believe that’s all of the free software that I can think of…

I use FireFTP (addon through Firefox, highly recommended!), and CAMZip (also recommended!). For anti-virus software, I have Sophos AntiVirus (you have to pay for it normally, but I got it free through my uni!).

I got all those paid ones for free at my dad’s shop. For photoshop, on the other hand, came free from my college =D

I agree with most of this, but for me at least, GIMP just doesn’t compare to even the relatively old version of Photoshop I have on my computer.

SmartFTP’s the program that I use, and it’s pretty good. I got Photoshop for free. I will definitely check out Avast, since I’ve been looking for a good Antivirus program

I’ll take anything over WSFTP it just feels so clunky. Filezilla 3 is nice but missing some things earlier versions had. I like Programmers Notepad, but it looks the same as Notepad++ (never used it). GIMPshop is supposed to be laid out more like Photoshop, so they say. But Photoshop is my love. AVG is what I use. AVG8 is nice. Installed Avast once. Looks like it has some neat features. WinZip just has been the de facto stand it seems. Used it from day one. Played with WinRar some, you need it for rars anyway. WinACE isn’t necessary. WinZip’s new evaulation popup is a lot more annoying now than older versions, but it never bothered me.

I’ve tried Gimp before when I was without Photoshop for a while. I couldn’t do nearly the things I do with Photoshop. I just ended up more frustrated.

Paint.Net is a handy little tool if you can’t afford a graphics program. It has some features you’d only find in programs you pay for. I have it installed as well as Photoshop. :)
