Party Planning 101: Music

Posted at May 12, 2008 3:58 pm

I have quite a talent on party hosting and party planning. It runs on my genes, you know. However, there are just some people who, no matter how much efforts they put into it, are just bad at it. So, I decided to make a series of blog posts entitled Party Planning 101. This is the first part of a still unknown number. Let’s get started, shall we?

  1. I highly recommend that you use an iPod, an mp3 player or even a laptop in playing songs. CDs are such a hassle. You want music to be continuously playing, without any interruption whatsoever.
  2. Build your playlist ahead of time. That way, no unwanted songs would be played during the party. No one wants to be jumping up and down to Madonna and then immediately hear My Chemical Romance, right?
  3. Keep in mind that unless you’re throwing a Valentines party or something with a romantic note, slow songs are a no-no. No one wants to enter your party and hear something like “I’ll be your crying shoulder.” It would totally kill the party mood so make sure you have songs that are upbeat and lively.
  4. It would be better to have speakers on each corner of the room. That way, music wouldn’t be concentrated on only one part of the room.
  5. Make sure your songs are numerous enough to be playing all night long without any repetitions. Once a person dances his/her heart out on a song, he/she wouldn’t probably want to do so again in a span of 5 hours.

Here are some songs that I recommend you have on your playlist:

  • Don’t Stop The Music - Rihanna
  • Shut Up and Drive - Rihanna
  • I Love Rock N’ Roll - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
  • 4 Minutes - Madonna
  • Gimme More - Britney Spears

If you have any tips to add, or more music to suggest, feel free to comment.

Ohh! Add those bubblegum music to the list too :D No party is a party without that! Especially if it’s a disco! XD

These are really great tips! The thing about tip #3 is that it’d also be really awkward to have any slow songs when the people at the party may not know any one else :P. So no one would want to slow dance with a complete stranger XD.

My kind of music would be one with a good beat that everyone can sing along with. None of my friends like Rihanna or Madonna, so maybe another good tip would be to have music that your friends would enjoy. :P

Hehe about your guide. It’s very nice! Except for the song list. Actually… Hahah, I don’t even know any songs I’d use at my parties! Hahahah, I listen to only music from the ’90s. =P

I’d also chuck in all those classics that everyone knows…Grease, etc. :P On for young and old!

The only song on your list that I would actually put on a playlist is I Love Rock N’ Roll. I don’t do Rhianna, Madonna or Britney.
